New Insights into Fish Nutrition: Current Trends in the Use of Additives Suitable for Fish

On September 16, 2025, a professional workshop titled “New Insights into Fish Nutrition – Current Trends in the Use of Additives Suitable for Fish” was held at Mendel University in Brno. It focused on current topics in the nutrition of aquaculture species and on alternative approaches to improving fish health without the use of antibiotics. The event was held as part of the Centre of Competence project – National Centre for Biotechnology in Veterinary Medicine (NaCeBiVet).

Scientific Programme

The opening presentation was delivered by Dr. Machovcová from the company Addicoo, who introduced an innovative approach to the prevention and treatment of livestock diseases without the use of antibiotics. Next, Dr. Mikulíková presented a study focused on the experimental use of an autochthonous strain of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum as a probiotic in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Dr. Lepková followed with a talk on the effects of adding beta-glucans to rainbow trout feed and their impact on the fish immune response and overall condition. Professor Palíková then reported the results of research examining the effects of selenium and zinc supplementation on the production and hematological parameters of rainbow trout. The workshop concluded with Dr. Všetičková, who outlined the potential use of wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) as a natural feed additive for common carp (Cyprinus carpio).

Collaboration and Project Goal

The workshop was part of the activities of the NaCeBiVet project, which aims to connect scientific knowledge in the fields of veterinary medicine, biotechnology, and animal nutrition. The discussions focused on the use of natural substances, probiotics, and trace elements as alternatives to antibiotics in aquaculture and on promoting sustainable fish farming.
