The VRI became a member of the Horizon Europe project consortium “New sustainable proteins for food, feed and non-food bio-based applications (NewPROT)“, submitted under the Horizon Europe call JU-CBE-2022-R-04. The project fits in with the Farm to Fork strategy and the European Green Deal priorities of addressing untapped and sustainable (environmental, technological, economic and social) protein sources with the aim to accelerate Europe’s self-sufficiency in protein production. It focuses on the use of proteins from microbial or insect sources for food, feed and non-food biological applications with the perspective of obtaining them in a circular and waste-free manner. The consortium is made up of 15 institutions, research organisations and companies from 9 EU countries. The main role of the VRI is to verify the applicability of experimental products by in vivo experiments. The duration of the project implementation is 48 months with an expected start in June 2023. The total estimated budget of the project is 5 Million EUR with a significant contribution (15%) from all small and medium-sized enterprises involved in the consortium, which increases the impact of the project and shows their commitment to achieve the project objectives.
