Urban wilderness in the heart of Brno: International Day for Biological Diversity at the Veterinary Research Institute

The International Day for Biological Diversity is observed annually on 22 May. This year, it is held under the theme “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development.” This day highlights the necessity of preserving biodiversity for a sustainable future and reminds us that nature is not a distant concept, but an integral part of our everyday lives—even in urban centres.

The Veterinary Research Institute, located in the heart of Brno, is living proof of this. Despite being surrounded by urban development, its grounds provide a refuge for a wide variety of free-ranging animal species. Regular inhabitants include squirrels, various bird species—among them owls and partridges—and even badgers. This biodiversity demonstrates that nature can thrive even in urbanised environments, provided it is given space and protection.

Urban biodiversity offers both ecological and educational benefits. The presence of free-living animals in urban environments can raise public awareness about the importance of nature conservation and foster interest in environmental issues. Moreover, contact with nature has a positive impact on people’s mental well-being.

To mark the International Day for Biological Diversity, a nationwide event called Biosmršť – Mapping of Non-native Species will take place from 23 to 25 May 2025, inviting the general public to participate. All you need to do is download the free iNaturalist app, head out into nature—even to city parks or your own backyard—and record the organisms you observe. Every entry helps experts better understand how the composition of our natural environment is changing and which species are appearing in our landscapes and cities.

In conclusion, we encourage the residents of Brno and other cities to take notice of the nature in their midst. Even small actions—such as installing feeders for birds and squirrels, planting native species, setting up birdhouses, or reducing the use of pesticides—can make a meaningful contribution to protecting urban biodiversity. Together, we can create an environment where people and nature live in harmony.
